Background. Due to the spread of infection in wounds and burns, the development and implementation of new film coatings with a pronounced antiseptic effect is an urgent task. Objective. Evaluation of the effect of isocyanurate polyurethane containing cefazolin on cellular reactions in connective tissue during implantation in experimental animals in vivo, as well as testing of possible acute toxic effects of such material, followed by determination of its biocompatibility. Methods. In order to study cellular reactions and assess the biocompatibility of isocyanurate polyurethane containing cefazolin, implantation of polymer samples into experimental animals was performed. The possible ability of extracts from polyurethane samples with cefazolin to cause acute systemic toxicity using the standard DSTU EN ISO 10993-11: 2015 Biological evaluation of medical devices. Part 11. Systemic toxicity testing (EN ISO 10993-11: 2009, IDT; ISO 10993-11: 2006, IDT) was also studied. Results. The effect of isocyanurate polyurethane containing cefazolin on cellular responses of surrounding tissues during implantation in experimental animals and during acute systemic toxicity testing was evaluated, which allowed to determine the degree of its biocompatibility. Conclusion. According to the results of histological studies, samples based on isocyanurate polyurethane containing 5 wt. % cefazolin had the highest degree of biocompatibility. It is shown that after dosing with an extract from a test material based on isocyanurate polyurethane containing 5 wt. % of cefazolin, no animal showed significantly greater biological reactivity than animals after dosing with control medium and no weight loss of more than 10% occurred, indicating the absence of acute systemic toxicity of the test sample. It was found that the tested samples are non-toxic, biocompatible and can be used in medical practice.
