Expert evaluation in all its forms plays an important role in ensuring the integrity of scientific activity. The process is more based on trust and requires that all participants behave responsibly and ethically. Reviewers play a central and decisive role in the peer review process, but too often are involved in the case without any directive and may not know their ethical obligations. Ethical principles for reviewers are based on the basic principles and standards that all reviewers should adhere to in the review process. We hope that they will be useful for researchers as a reference for journals and editors in the guidance of their reviewers, and will act as an educational resource for institutions in training their students and researchers.
